A rare 1950s postwar Japanese cherry swirl glass necklace featuring vivid carnelian-red and milk-white beads that transform under UV light, the red glowing orange and yellow from cadmiumselenium pigments, the white shifting to lavender-grey from manganese oxide in the glass. Hand-knotted on silk and finished with a domed milk-glass clasp marked Japan, this is a museum-grade example of early mid-century export glasswork. Its luminous pigments, the same used in Japans postwar Cherry Brand bead production, were discontinued globally by the late 1960s, making intact strands like this both visually striking and historically significant.
